Is the JR Pass Worth It?
This depends entirely on your itinerary. The pass is worth it if your train travel costs more than the pass price. Calculate your planned routes at Hyperdia.com or Japan-guide.com.
When the JR Pass IS worth it:
Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima → back to Tokyo (the classic Shinkansen route):
- Tokyo–Kyoto: ¥13,850 (Nozomi, not covered by pass) / ¥13,320 (Hikari, covered)
- Kyoto–Hiroshima: ¥10,490
- Hiroshima–Tokyo: ¥19,080
- Total: ~¥43,000 → 7-day pass (¥50,000) borderline, 14-day clearly worth it if adding more trips
Tokyo → Sapporo (Hokkaido): ¥24,000 each way → 7-day pass worth it with this single route
When the JR Pass is NOT worth it:
- Tokyo only: Local metro (Suica) and minimal JR use — don’t buy the pass
- Tokyo + day trips only: Day trips to Kamakura, Nikko, Hakone don’t require the pass
- Osaka + Kyoto only: Short distances, local trains more practical
The Nozomi Caveat
The fastest Shinkansen — Nozomi — is NOT covered by the JR Pass. You must use Hikari or Sakura on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen. Hikari takes 10–20 minutes longer. This is not a significant issue for most travelers.

How to Buy the JR Pass
Option A — Online purchase before travel: Buy at japanrailpass.net or through authorized resellers. Receive an exchange order, convert to physical pass at JR offices in Japan.
Option B — At the airport on arrival: Available at major international airports (Narita, Haneda, Kansai). Queue can be long.
Activate your pass: At JR Ticket Offices (Midori-no-Madoguchi) at major stations. Choose your start date when activating — you don’t need to activate on arrival day.
—
How to Use the JR Pass
At ticket gates: Show pass to staff at the staffed gate (don’t put it through the automatic gates). Staff will wave you through.
For reserved seats: At any JR Ticket Office or machine, reserve seats for Shinkansen (recommended for peak season, required for certain trains). Free with the pass.
On unreserved cars: Just board any unreserved car without a reservation.
