Shinkansen Tips for First-Timers

Shinkansen Tips for First-Timers

Types of Shinkansen

Nozomi: Fastest (Tokyo–Osaka 2h15min). NOT JR Pass covered.
Hikari: Second fastest. JR Pass covered ✓. 10–15 min slower.
Kodama: Slowest, stops everywhere. JR Pass covered ✓. Always has seats.

Buying Tickets

At JR ticket offices (Midori no Madoguchi), online via JR Pass site, or at English-menu ticket machines. Book popular weekend routes 2–3 days ahead.

Reserved vs Unreserved

Unreserved (jiyuseki) is ¥530 cheaper but no guaranteed seat. During busy periods, unreserved cars can be standing room only. Reserve seats for peace of mind — free with JR Pass.

Boarding

Painted markers on the platform show exactly where each car door will arrive. Trains depart and arrive to the second. If your ticket says 14:23, it leaves at exactly 14:23.

On Board

Seats recline significantly (armrest button). Tray tables fold from the seat in front. Electrical outlets at window seats in most cars. Large luggage area at end of each car. Oversized bags (160cm+ combined) require a reserved luggage space — book when buying ticket.

Food

Ekiben (station box lunches) are sold at all major stations and on the train itself. Buying an ekiben and eating it on the shinkansen is a cherished Japanese travel ritual.
