Best Autumn Foliage Spots in Japan

Kyoto — The Classic Choice

Kyoto’s temples surrounded by maple forests turn November into a month-long celebration of color.

Top spots:

  • Tofuku-ji: The best koyo spot in Kyoto. The stone bridge over a river of maple trees turns completely red. Go early morning — before 9am.
  • Eikan-do (Zenrin-ji): One of Kyoto’s most popular autumn temples. Multi-pagoda with vivid maple colors.
  • Rurikoin: Hidden gem — only open during special seasons including autumn. Limited entry, extraordinary garden.
  • Arashiyama: Bamboo grove with autumn maple hillsides reflected in the Oi River.
  • Kiyomizudera: Hillside temple surrounded by autumn color — stunning views over colored Kyoto.

Crowd warning: Kyoto in mid-November is extremely crowded. Book accommodation 3–6 months ahead.

Nikko — Mountain Drama

North of Tokyo, Nikko’s mountain setting means colors peak earlier (mid-October) and the combination of elaborate shrines with autumn forest is extraordinary.

Best spot: The road leading up to Tosho-gu shrine lined with ancient cedar and maple trees in autumn color. Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji surrounded by autumn foliage.

Why choose Nikko over Kyoto: Earlier season (October vs November), fewer international tourists, mountain scenery adds drama.

Hokkaido — First and Most Dramatic

Hokkaido sees the first autumn colors in Japan — and the most dramatic. Daisetsuzan National Park peaks in early October.

Best spots:

  • Daisetsuzan National Park: Japan’s largest national park. Alpine tundra turning red, orange, and gold from late September.
  • Sounkyo Gorge: Steep cliffs with waterfalls surrounded by autumn color. One of Japan’s most striking landscapes.
  • Sapporo’s parks and botanical gardens: Accessible city foliage.

Tokyo — Urban Autumn

Tokyo’s parks and gardens offer beautiful autumn color despite being in one of the world’s largest cities.

Best spots:

  • Shinjuku Gyoen: One of Tokyo’s finest gardens. Hundreds of different tree species turn at different times, extending the season.
  • Rikugien Garden: Traditional garden with weeping cherry trees replaced by weeping maples in autumn — night illumination events.
  • Koishikawa Korakuen: Oldest garden in Tokyo with excellent autumn color.
  • Meiji Jingu Gaien: Famous ginkgo avenue turning brilliant gold in late November.

Autumn vs Cherry Blossom Season: Which Is Better?

Factor Cherry Blossoms Autumn Foliage
Duration 1–2 weeks per location 2–3 weeks per location
Unpredictability High Moderate
Crowds Maximum Very high but slightly less
Accommodation prices Highest High
Colors Pale pink/white Vivid red, orange, gold
Overall Ethereal Dramatic

Verdict: Both are extraordinary. Autumn foliage is slightly less frenetic, offers more color variety, and lasts longer. Cherry blossoms feel more fleeting and therefore more precious.

Tips for Autumn Foliage Season

Go early morning: The first 2 hours of opening time at major spots are dramatically less crowded.

Weekdays only: Kyoto autumn weekends are wall-to-wall people. Mid-week visits are significantly more pleasant.

Night illuminations (yoru momiji): Many temples and gardens are illuminated after dark during peak season. Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizudera, Rikugien — all offer evening special openings. Often more beautiful and slightly less crowded than daytime.

Weather matters: Autumn foliage needs cold nights to develop the best colors. A warm autumn delays and mutes the colors.

Guided autumn foliage tours of Kyoto and Nikko include access to special illumination events and expert commentary on the best spots. Book well ahead for November dates.
