Why Hakone
Tokyo’s most popular day trip — 90 minutes away with Mt Fuji views (weather permitting), onsen hot springs, a world-class open-air sculpture museum, and a beautiful lake. One of Japan’s most efficient day trip circuits.
Getting There
Romancecar (Odakyu Limited Express): Shinjuku → Hakone-Yumoto: 85 min, ¥2,470. Comfortable, scenic, no transfers.
Hakone Free Pass: ¥5,000–6,500 — includes round-trip Romancecar + unlimited Hakone transport. Almost always worth buying.
The Classic Loop
Arrive Hakone-Yumoto → Tozan Train to Gora → Cable Car to Sounzan → Ropeway over volcanic Owakudani → Lake Ashi boat to Moto-Hakone → Bus back to Hakone-Yumoto → Romancecar back to Shinjuku.
Key Attractions
Owakudani: Active volcanic valley, sulphurous vents, black onsen eggs, possible Mt Fuji views from ropeway.
Lake Ashi: Scenic lake with Mt Fuji backdrop and torii gate at the water’s edge.
Hakone Open-Air Museum: World-class sculpture in beautiful grounds. ¥1,600 (discounted with Free Pass). Highly recommended.
Onsen day use: Tenzan Tohji-kyo is excellent. ¥1,000–1,400.
