Top Attractions in Osaka
Dotonbori
The heart of Osaka. A canal district lined with giant neon signs — the Glico Running Man, mechanical crabs and lobsters on restaurant facades, bright lights reflected in the water. Day and night it’s electric.
Eat your way down Dotonbori street: takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, ramen, and every possible deep-fried thing.
Osaka Castle
17th-century castle surrounded by a massive park. The interior museum traces Osaka’s history. The 8th-floor observation deck has excellent city views. Cherry blossoms in spring make the park one of Japan’s best hanami spots.
¥600 entry to castle tower.
Kuromon Ichiba Market
Osaka’s “kitchen” — a 580-meter covered market with 170+ stalls. Fresh seafood, grilled wagyu on skewers, fugu (pufferfish), crab, sea urchin. Best visited in the morning when everything is freshest.
Shinsekai
Retro working-class neighborhood built in 1912 to resemble Paris and New York. Now pleasantly faded — cheap kushikatsu restaurants, pachinko parlors, the Tsutenkaku Tower. Authentic and unpretentious.
Umeda Sky Building
Two towers connected by a “floating garden” observatory 170 meters high. One of Osaka’s most striking pieces of architecture. Views of the entire city and on clear days to mountains beyond.
Universal Studios Japan
Japan’s most popular theme park. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is exceptionally well done. Book tickets and popular attraction passes well in advance. Full day activity.
Namba
Osaka’s entertainment and shopping core. Shinsaibashi shopping arcade (Japan’s longest covered shopping street at 600m), Den Den Town (Osaka’s Akihabara), American Village.

Osaka Food Guide
Osaka is Japan’s undisputed food capital. Eating here is not just sustenance — it’s the primary activity.
Takoyaki
Octopus-filled batter balls cooked in special round-celled iron plates, topped with bonito flakes, mayo, and sauce. The bonito dances from the heat. Try at Wanaka (Dotonbori) or from street stalls everywhere.
Okonomiyaki
Osaka-style okonomiyaki is mixed in the batter before cooking (unlike Hiroshima style which is layered). Cabbage, egg, meat or seafood, topped with mayo and okonomiyaki sauce. Mizuno (Dotonbori) has been making it since 1945.
Kushikatsu
Deep-fried skewers of meat, seafood and vegetables. The Shinsekai neighborhood is the spiritual home. One rule: never double-dip in the shared sauce. This is taken very seriously.
Ramen
Osaka’s ramen scene has evolved dramatically. Kinryu Ramen (Dotonbori) is the city’s most famous — open 24 hours, ¥700.
Kani Doraku (Crab)
Osaka is famous for its giant mechanical crab signs — and the crab. Expensive (¥5,000–15,000) but excellent quality.
Morning markets and convenience stores
Start the day at Kuromon market or simply with a 7-Eleven breakfast. Osaka’s convenience store food is even better than Tokyo’s.
