Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan

Tokyo

Ueno Park — The most famous hanami spot. Gets extremely crowded on weekends but the density of trees is unmatched. Go on a weekday morning.

Shinjuku Gyoen — More refined, less chaotic. Paid entry (¥500) keeps crowds manageable. Excellent variety of cherry tree species.

Chidorigafuchi — Moat surrounding the Imperial Palace. Row boats among cherry blossoms — one of Tokyo’s most romantic spots. Queue for boats can be 2+ hours.

Meguro River — 4km canal lined with 800 cherry trees. Lit up at night for yozakura (nighttime cherry blossom viewing). Best experienced after dark.

Yoyogi Park — Huge open space popular with locals. More relaxed atmosphere than Ueno.

Kyoto

Maruyama Park — Central, free, anchored by a famous weeping cherry tree (shidare-zakura) that’s illuminated at night. Extremely crowded but unmissable.

Philosopher’s Path — 2km canal walk lined with cherry trees. Best in early morning before crowds arrive. Connects Ginkakuji to Nanzenji.

Kiyomizudera — Temple on a hillside with panoramic views over blooming cherry trees. Stunning backdrop for photos.

Arashiyama — Cherry trees along the Oi River and hillsides surrounding the bamboo grove. Less crowded than central Kyoto spots.

Nijo Castle — Over 400 cherry trees within the castle grounds. Illuminated at night during season.

Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto

Hirosaki Castle (Aomori) — Often cited as Japan’s most spectacular cherry blossom spot. 2,600 trees surround a castle moat. Blooms late April. Worth the detour.

Yoshino (Nara Prefecture) — 30,000 cherry trees covering an entire mountain. Extraordinary scale. Blooms late March – early April.

Takato Castle (Nagano) — Famous for its deep-pink variety (Takato-kohigan). Stunning against mountain backdrop.

What Is Hanami?

Hanami literally means “flower viewing.” In practice it means gathering under cherry trees with friends, food and drinks — a tradition that dates back over 1,000 years.

Hanami etiquette:

  • Arrive early to claim your spot (blue tarps everywhere)
  • Bring a picnic: convenience store onigiri, bento boxes, sake or beer
  • Leave no rubbish — bins are rare, bring a bag
  • Respect noise levels in residential areas
  • Smoking only in designated areas

Cherry Blossom Season Tips

Book accommodation 6–12 months ahead. This is not an exaggeration. Popular ryokans and well-located hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo sell out completely.

Avoid Golden Week. Cherry blossoms and Golden Week (late April – May 5) overlap in northern Japan. Prices spike dramatically.

Go early or late in the day. Popular spots are mobbed between 10am–4pm. Dawn visits to places like Philosopher’s Path are magical and peaceful.

Visit multiple spots. Bloom timing varies by location and microclimate. Visit a mix of open parks, temple gardens and riverside spots.

Bring cash. Many street food vendors and smaller eateries around hanami spots are cash-only.

Rainy days have their own beauty. Wet petals on stone temple paths can be just as stunning as blue-sky views.

Cherry Blossoms at Night (Yozakura)

Many parks and temples illuminate cherry trees after dark — a completely different and equally beautiful experience.

Best spots for night cherry blossoms:

  • Meguro River, Tokyo
  • Maruyama Park, Kyoto
  • Nijo Castle, Kyoto
  • Osaka Castle Park, Osaka
  • Hirosaki Castle, Aomori

Budget Tips for Cherry Blossom Season

Cherry blossom season is peak pricing season. Here’s how to manage costs:

Accommodation: Book early and consider staying slightly outside central areas. Asakusa and Ueno in Tokyo are cheaper than Shinjuku or Shibuya.

Free spots: Ueno Park, Yoyogi Park, Chidorigafuchi, and most riverside spots are completely free.

Food: Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) sell excellent bento boxes for ¥500–800. Perfect for picnics.

Transport: Buy an IC card (Suica or Pasmo) on arrival. Avoid taxis — use trains and buses.
