Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Tips

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Tips

The Reality

The 300-meter bamboo grove is one of Japan’s most photographed images. The reality: it’s short and usually packed with people. At the right time, it’s genuinely magical.

When to Visit

Dawn (6–7am): Arrive before tour buses (9am). Near-silence, mist in the stalks, soft morning light. This is the difference between magical and disappointing.
After 5pm: Day-trippers leave. Better than midday, not as dramatic as dawn.

Beyond the Bamboo Grove

Arashiyama is far more than 300 meters of bamboo. Spend a full half-day:

Jojakko-ji Temple: 5-min walk uphill from the grove. Ancient five-story pagoda on a hillside, mossy stone steps, near-silence. Far better than the crowded Tenryu-ji below.
Tenryu-ji Garden: UNESCO-listed Zen garden. Excellent pond garden with maple and cherry trees. ¥500 garden entry.
Togetsukyo Bridge: Scenic bridge over the Oi River — walk the riverbank for views of forested mountains reflected in the water.
Sagano Romantic Train: 25-min narrow-gauge railway through a river gorge. ¥900. Seasonal (March–December).

Getting There

JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station (15 min from Kyoto Station, ¥240) or Randen tram to Arashiyama.
