Fuji Five Lakes Complete Guide

Fuji Five Lakes Complete Guide

The Five Lakes

Kawaguchiko, Yamanakako, Saiko, Shojiko, and Motosuko — five lakes at Mt Fuji’s northern base offering Japan’s best Fuji views and outdoor activities. Kawaguchiko is most accessible; the others offer solitude.

Lake Kawaguchiko

Most developed and popular. North shore offers classic Mt Fuji reflection at dawn. Kawaguchiko Music Forest (¥1,500) has a beautiful European garden with Fuji views. Retro bus tour covers major viewpoints. Excellent accommodation range.

Lake Yamanakako

Largest of the five. Great for cycling the perimeter (rental bikes available, consistent Fuji views from eastern shore). Swan boats available. Less crowded than Kawaguchiko.

Lake Saiko

Most natural setting — forest, fewer tourists, some excellent camping. Nearby Narusawa Ice Cave and Fugaku Wind Cave are lava tubes with year-round ice formations.

Oshino Hakkai

Eight spring-fed ponds between Kawaguchiko and Yamanakako, fed by Fuji snowmelt. Crystal clear with Fuji reflection — extraordinarily beautiful in early morning.

Getting There

Highway bus from Shinjuku (Busta Shinjuku): ¥2,000 one way to Kawaguchiko, 1h50min. Runs frequently. Book ahead on weekends.
JR + Fujikyu Railway: ~¥3,000, 2h30min, more scenic route.
