Why Winter Is Underrated
Japan in winter has a devoted following — and rightly so. Snow-covered temples in Kyoto, the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival, world-class skiing in Hokkaido and Nagano, winter illuminations in every city, and the lowest tourist numbers of the year outside of late December.

What to Do in Japan in Winter
Sapporo Snow Festival (February)
Massive snow and ice sculptures in Odori Park. One of Asia’s greatest winter events. 2 million visitors annually. Book 6+ months ahead for accommodation.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Hokkaido (Niseko, Rusutsu, Furano): World-class powder snow. English-friendly resorts. Peak season January–February.
Nagano (Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen): Used in the 1998 Winter Olympics. Multiple linked resorts. Excellent powder.
Niigata (Naeba, Gala Yuzawa): Closest major ski resort to Tokyo (75 minutes by Shinkansen).
Winter Illuminations
Japan’s cities light up with elaborate LED displays from November–February.
Best: Nabana no Sato (Mie Prefecture) — Japan’s most spectacular. Rikugien (Tokyo), Ashikaga Flower Park (Tochigi), Sagano Romantic Train (Kyoto).
Onsen in Snow (Yuki-mi Onsen)
Soaking in an outdoor hot spring (rotenburo) while snow falls around you is one of Japan’s most quintessential experiences. Best at: Kusatsu, Hakone, Nikko, Noboribetsu (Hokkaido).
Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani)
Japanese macaques soaking in natural hot springs surrounded by snow. Near Nagano. Accessible by train and bus.

Kyoto: Cold (2–10°C), occasional snow on temples — beautiful.

Okinawa: Mild (18–22°C) — Japan’s warm winter escape.
