Japan’s Four Distinct Seasons
Spring (March–May)
Japan’s most popular travel season. Cherry blossoms (March–April) are the main draw. Weather: mild, 10–20°C. Golden Week (late April–early May) is extremely crowded and expensive — avoid or plan well ahead. May is arguably Japan’s best month: post-blossom crowds, beautiful greenery, mild weather, reasonable prices.
Summer (June–August)
Rainy season (tsuyu) in June–mid-July — warm and humid with frequent rain. Mid-July to August: hot and humid (30–35°C), especially in cities. Excellent for Hokkaido (cooler, lavender season) and mountain areas. Festival season: bon dances, fireworks, beach culture. Crowded during Obon (mid-August).
Autumn (September–November)
Japan’s second peak season. Autumn leaves (koyo) peak in November — spectacular colors nationwide. September is typhoon season (check forecasts). October is excellent: clear weather, no major crowds, comfortable temperatures. November is the start of koyo crowds in Kyoto.
Winter (December–February)
Cold (0–10°C in most cities, below freezing in Hokkaido). Best visibility for Mt Fuji views. Snow in the Japanese Alps creates excellent ski conditions (Niseko, Hakuba). New Year and Obon are crowded domestic travel periods. January–February: fewer tourists, lower prices, clear skies.
