Japan’s Alps Ski Village
Hakuba Valley in Nagano hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics and contains 10 interconnected ski resorts. More accessible from Tokyo (2.5 hours) than Niseko with excellent powder and dramatic Japanese Alps scenery.
The 10 Resorts
Main resorts: Happo-One (largest, best terrain variety, Olympic downhill course), Goryu/Iimori (family-friendly), Iwatake (wide groomed runs), Norikura (uncrowded, good powder), Tsugaike (large area, varied terrain).
Combined Hakuba Valley Ticket covers all 10: ¥6,500–7,500/day.
Happo-One
The flagship — 13 lifts, vertical drop 1,071m. Best views of the Northern Alps from the summit. Most crowded on weekends.
Best For
All abilities, especially intermediates. More accessible and better value than Niseko. Hakuba village retains traditional Japanese mountain town character that Niseko’s international development has partly erased.
Getting There
Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano (75 min, ¥8,340) + bus to Hakuba (60 min, ¥1,700) = 2h30min total. Direct buses from Shinjuku in ski season (¥3,000–4,000, 4 hours).
