Ease of Travel
Japan wins clearly. English signage everywhere, safe, intuitive transport. One of the easiest countries to travel independently.
China is challenging: Internet restrictions (need VPN), significant language barrier, payment app setup required, police registration in each city. Rewarding but requires preparation.
Culture and History
Japan: Shinto/Buddhist synthesis, samurai history, tea ceremony, geisha culture — one of the world’s most distinctive civilizations.
China: World’s longest continuous civilization. Forbidden City, Great Wall, terracotta warriors. Truly epic scale.
Food
Both world-class. Japan more accessible for Western palates — point at plastic food models. China has more regional diversity (Sichuan, Cantonese, Shanghai) but language barrier makes ordering harder without preparation.
Cost
China is noticeably cheaper, especially for accommodation and food.
Recommendation
First time in Asia: Japan — easier, safer, immediately rewarding, world-class infrastructure.
More experienced traveler: China — more challenging but uniquely rewarding. The scale of history and geography is unmatched.
