Japan Travel in 2025: What’s New
Japan is fully open to tourists with no restrictions. Tourist numbers have rebounded strongly since 2023, and several new policies and facilities affect how you travel.
Key 2025 Changes
Tourist tax: Many major destinations now charge a small tourist tax (¥200–500/night per person) added to accommodation bills. Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, and Nara all have active programs. Budget for this as a minor additional cost.
Fujiyoshida crowd barriers: Popular photo spots near Mt Fuji (most famously the Lawson convenience store view) have installed barriers due to overcrowding. New alternatives are emerging.
Kyoto photography restrictions: Gion area restrictions on photography have expanded. Respect local residents.
Expanded e-visa: Japan’s e-visa program now covers more nationalities — check mofa.go.jp for your country’s status.
Best New Experiences in 2025
teamLab has opened new venues. The Hokkaido Shinkansen has extended slightly toward Sapporo (full opening ~2031). Several new luxury ryokan have opened in Noto Peninsula (recovering from the 2024 earthquake).
Practical 2025 Tips
The yen remains weak — excellent value for foreign visitors. Book popular sites (teamLab, Ghibli Museum, Disneyland) weeks or months in advance online. IC card shortages have resolved — Suica and Pasmo are freely available again.
