Japan’s Rainy Season (Tsuyu)
Japan experiences a distinct rainy season (tsuyu or baiu) typically running from early June through mid-July. This is Japan’s least popular tourist period — but it has genuine appeal for the right traveler.
When and Where
The rainy front moves north: Okinawa (May), Kyushu and Shikoku (early June), Kansai and Tokyo (mid-June), Tohoku (late June). It ends in mid-July, followed by Japan’s hot, humid summer.
What the Rainy Season Is Like
Not constant rain — more like overcast skies with regular rain showers, occasional heavy downpours. Temperatures are warm (20–28°C) and humidity is high. Mold and dampness are common in older buildings. Hydrangeas (ajisai) bloom throughout June — some of Japan’s most beautiful floral displays.
Rainy Season Advantages
- Significantly fewer tourists at major sites
- Lower accommodation prices
- Hydrangea (ajisai) season — Kamakura‘s Meigetsu-in and Hakone‘s Gora Park are spectacular in June
- Lush, deep green landscapes
- Misty atmospherics at temples and shrines — beautiful photography conditions
Tips for Rainy Season Travel
- Bring a compact umbrella or buy one at a convenience store (¥500–1,000)
- Indoor attractions (museums, onsen, temples under roof covers) are excellent choices
- Morning is typically drier than afternoon
