How to Get from Tokyo to Hokkaido

Flying (Best Current Option)

1h30min flight from Haneda/Narita to New Chitose Airport (Sapporo). ¥8,000–20,000 one way with ANA, JAL, Air Do, or Peach. New Chitose Airport is 40 min from Sapporo city center by train (¥1,500). Standard way most people travel Tokyo–Hokkaido. — book a Kiwi.com in advance for the best price.

Shinkansen (Partial)

The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently runs to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto only — not Sapporo. Tokyo → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto: ~4h, then connecting train to Sapporo: ~3.5h = 7.5h total (~¥22,000). Not practical for most tourists. Full Sapporo extension expected ~2031.

Ferry (Adventure Option)

Overnight ferries from Tomakomai (Hokkaido) depart from Sendai and Oarai (near Tokyo). About 20 hours total. Private cabins available. ¥10,000–20,000. A genuinely unique experience.

Recommendation

Fly. Search Haneda–Sapporo on Google Flights. Peach and Air Do consistently offer cheap fares (¥8,000–12,000). Book 3–6 weeks ahead for best prices.
