Japan Koyo Season Overview
Japan’s autumn leaf season (koyo) is arguably more spectacular than cherry blossom season — and far less crowded. Colors peak from mid-October through December, progressing north to south.
Peak Dates by City
Hokkaido: Mid-September–mid-October | Nikko: Mid-October–early November | Tokyo: Mid-November–early December | Kyoto: Nov 20–Dec 5 | Osaka: Late November–mid-December
Best Koyo Spots
Kyoto: Tofukuji Temple, Eikando, Arashiyama — the best combination of temples and autumn color in Japan
Nikko: Toshogu Shrine area, Irohazaka road through the mountains
Hokkaido: Daisetsuzan National Park, Sounkyo Gorge — Japan’s earliest color
Why Autumn Is Underrated
Weather is crisp and clear, crowds are smaller than cherry blossom season, and colors last 2–3 weeks vs 1–2 for sakura. Prices are also lower. Combine with onsen stays for the perfect autumn trip.
