Japan has one of the world’s most vibrant contemporary art scenes, from cutting-edge digital installations to traditional craft elevated to high art.
teamLab
The world’s most visited digital art collective. Two Tokyo venues:
teamLab Planets (Toyosu): Immersive water-based installations. Smaller, more intimate. ¥3,200. Book weeks ahead.
teamLab Borderless (Azabudai, reopened 2024): Larger, more diverse installations. ¥3,800. Also books out weeks ahead. Both venues require online advance booking — they sell out regularly.
Roppongi Art Triangle (Tokyo)
Three world-class contemporary art museums within walking distance:
Mori Art Museum: 53rd floor of Mori Tower — major international exhibitions plus spectacular Tokyo views. ¥2,000.
National Art Center: Japan’s largest exhibition space. Architecture alone is worth a visit. ¥1,500–2,000.
Suntory Museum of Art: Japanese traditional crafts displayed as contemporary art. ¥1,000–1,500.
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (Kanazawa)
