Understanding Koyo
Koyo (紅葉) — autumn leaf viewing — is one of Japan’s great seasonal traditions. The season transforms forests, temple gardens, and mountain slopes into a canvas of crimson, gold, and orange from September through December.
The Koyo Progression
Autumn color moves north to south and high to low elevation. Hokkaido peaks in September–October, Tokyo and Kyoto in mid-to-late November, southern regions in December. Follow the season across Japan for continuous color.
Best Destinations
Kyoto: Tofukuji’s maple corridor, Eikando’s lit evening displays, and Arashiyama‘s hillsides. Japan’s premier koyo destination.
Nikko: Dramatic mountain scenery with ornate Edo-period shrines. The Irohazaka switchback road is spectacular.
Kamikochi: Alpine valley turns brilliant gold in October with Northern Alps backdrop. Access closes mid-November.
Photography Tips
- Golden hour (30 min after sunrise) gives warmest light on red maples
- Overcast days reduce harsh shadows in temple gardens
- Rain intensifies the color and reduces crowds
- Evening illumination events (momijigari) are worth planning around
