Introduction
Thailand is Asia’s most visited country — and for good reason. Pristine beaches and tropical islands, ancient temples rising from jungle, extraordinary street food at every corner, and a cost of living that makes extended travel genuinely accessible. The country handles tourists with practiced ease while remaining authentically itself.
Whether you want to party on a full moon beach, meditate at a forest monastery, ride elephants ethically in Chiang Mai, or simply eat your way through Bangkok’s street markets, Thailand delivers.

Thailand by Region
Bangkok
Thailand’s capital is a city of extremes — ancient temples beside glass skyscrapers, rooftop bars overlooking golden spires, floating markets and air-conditioned mega-malls. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and endlessly fascinating.
Don’t miss: Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Grand Palace, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Yaowarat (Chinatown), Khao San Road (once, briefly), Thonglor (for excellent restaurants).
Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai)
The mountainous north is Thailand’s cultural heartland — home to ancient Lanna Kingdom temples, hill tribe villages, ethical elephant sanctuaries, and some of Southeast Asia’s best trekking.
Don’t miss: Doi Suthep temple, Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Rai White Temple, Pai Valley, Sunday Walking Street.
Southern Thailand — Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta)
The west coast’s turquoise Andaman Sea, dramatic limestone karst islands, and clear water make this Southeast Asia’s most photographed coastline.
Best time: November–April (dry season). Avoid May–October (monsoon, rough seas).
Southern Thailand — Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao)
The east coast has its own tropical island paradise. Koh Tao is one of the world’s best budget dive destinations. Koh Phangan has the Full Moon Party and increasingly sophisticated accommodation.
Best time: February–September (opposite to Andaman coast).
Central Thailand (Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi)
Ancient capitals and war history. Ayutthaya was Thailand’s former capital — temples and Buddha heads still rise from the ruins. Kanchanaburi has the Death Railway and River Kwai.

Getting Around Thailand
Budget airlines (Air Asia, Nok Air): Cheapest for long distances. Bangkok–Chiang Mai flights from ¥500 baht.
Overnight sleeper trains: Romantic, affordable, practical. Bangkok–Chiang Mai (13 hours) and Bangkok–Surat Thani (for islands) are the main tourist routes.
Overnight buses: Cheaper than trains, less comfortable. VIP buses have reclining seats.
Grab: Thailand’s Uber equivalent. Works in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket. Fixed price, no meter disputes.
Songthaew: Red shared pickup trucks in Chiang Mai. ¥30–50 baht per person for shared rides.
Renting a scooter: Common in islands and Chiang Mai. Always wear a helmet. International driving permit technically required but rarely checked.

Thailand Practical Tips
Cash is king: ATMs everywhere but charge ฿220 foreign fee per withdrawal. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently.
SIM card: Buy at airport on arrival. AIS and DTAC offer tourist SIMs with data for ฿299–499 for 30 days.
Dress respectfully at temples: Cover shoulders and knees. Sarongs are lent at major temples if needed.
Water: Always drink bottled or filtered. Never tap water.
Bargaining: Expected at markets, not at malls or restaurants with menus.
Tuk tuks: Tourist novelty — always negotiate before getting in. Often more expensive than Grab.
