Sri Lanka Travel Guide

Introduction

Sri Lanka packs extraordinary diversity into a small island — ancient rock fortresses, colonial hill stations, tea plantations, world-class beaches, incredible wildlife, and some of Asia’s most beautiful train journeys.

Must-Visit Destinations

Sigiriya

5th-century rock fortress — 200m rock rising from jungle, topped with palace ruins. One of Asia’s great archaeological sites. Entry: $30 for foreigners.

Kandy

Last royal capital. Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) — Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist site. The Esala Perahera festival (July–August) is one of Asia’s grandest processions.

Ella

Mountain village in tea country. Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock hikes. The Nine Arch Bridge photographed with the passing train.

Galle

Perfectly preserved Dutch colonial fort town on the southwest coast. Walk the ramparts at sunset.

Yala National Park

World’s highest density of wild leopards. Safari jeeps: $60–100.

The Famous Train Journey

Kandy to Ella: 6 hours through tea plantations and cloud forest. Book Class 1 observation car (500 LKR) weeks ahead — heavily in demand.

Yala National Park safari jeeps and Sigiriya day trips are bookable on Klook. Book Yala safaris in advance during peak season.
