Sri Lanka Itinerary: Two Weeks Around the Island

A small country, extraordinary variety

Sri Lanka is roughly the size of Ireland but packs in ancient cities, tea-covered highlands, world-class beaches, wildlife safaris, and Buddhist temples of extraordinary beauty. Two weeks is enough to experience its main highlights without rushing. Here is the circuit I would recommend.

Days 1-2: Colombo

Most fly into Colombo. The city gets dismissed as a transit point but has genuine character — the Pettah market, Galle Face Green at sunset, the Dutch colonial fort area, excellent food at Ministry of Crab. Use Colombo to adjust to the climate and pace.

Days 3-5: Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya and Dambulla)

Drive north from Colombo (3-4 hours). Sigiriya on day 3 — the rock fortress is genuinely extraordinary, climb early before the heat. Dambulla Cave Temple in the afternoon. Day 4: Polonnaruwa (the better-preserved ancient capital, massive and uncrowded). Day 5: Anuradhapura (the earliest capital, UNESCO, good cycling distances).

Days 6-8: Kandy and Tea Country

Kandy: Temple of the Tooth, Kandy Lake, the botanical gardens at Peradeniya. Train to Ella via Nuwara Eliya — one of the world’s great rail journeys through tea plantations. Ella: Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak hike, Ella Rock.

Days 9-11: South Coast

Drive south from Ella to Mirissa or Unawatuna. Beach, whale watching (December-April), sea turtles, excellent seafood. Galle Fort is a short drive west — UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial fort, excellent restaurants and boutique hotels.

Days 12-14: Yala and back to Colombo

Yala National Park for leopard safaris (the highest leopard density of any national park in the world). Two safari drives over one day are optimal. Drive back to Colombo for departure. Book transfers through Welcome Pickups for reliable airport connections.
