No visa application needed for most visitors
The Maldives operates one of the most tourist-friendly entry systems in the world — citizens of most countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Velana International Airport. No advance application, no fee, no paperwork beyond your passport and onward ticket.
What you need on arrival
Valid passport (at least 6 months validity). Confirmed onward or return ticket. Evidence of accommodation (resort booking or guesthouse reservation). Sufficient funds for your stay (technically required, rarely checked). Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with yellow fever risk.
Extension
The free 30-day visa on arrival can be extended to 90 days by applying at the Maldives Immigration Department in Malé. Cost: approximately $30. Most tourists on resort packages do not need this, but longer-stay local island visitors sometimes extend.
Practical entry tips
The immigration queue at Velana Airport can be long when multiple international flights arrive simultaneously. The process itself is fast once you reach the counter. Have your resort or guesthouse booking confirmation easily accessible on your phone. Currency: US dollars are widely accepted alongside the Maldivian Rufiyaa. ATMs at the airport and in Malé.
