The Full Moon Party: What It’s Actually Like (From Someone Who’s Been Twice)

Managing expectations first

I want to be upfront: I’m not the target audience for the Full Moon Party. I was 27 the first time I went, thought it was chaotic and loud and exactly what it should be. I was 32 the second time, had a beer at 10pm, watched a while, and went to bed by 1am. Both experiences were correct for where I was at the time.

Here’s what it’s actually like, without the either/or of “life-changing party” and “tourist trap.”

What it is

The Full Moon Party happens every full moon on Haad Rin beach on Koh Phangan, in the southern Gulf. 10,000–30,000 people depending on the month, on a beach with multiple sound systems, fire shows, buckets of Thai whiskey-Red Bull, paint everywhere, and DJs ranging from legitimately good to someone’s laptop. It runs from around 9pm to dawn.

The practical stuff you need to know

Buy footwear you don’t care about or go barefoot — broken glass is a serious hazard. The buckets (กาลักน้ำ) are strong. Don’t leave drinks unattended. The ferry transfers to and from Haad Rin sell out — book accommodation there in advance or accept that the journey home at 5am is part of the adventure. Budget ฿2,000–3,000 for the night if you’re drinking.

What’s changed recently

Post-pandemic the FMP got more safety-conscious — better lighting, more first aid presence, a slight reduction in the more chaotic elements. The paint parties and half-moon parties around Koh Phangan have also grown, so there are now multiple reasons to spend a week on the island rather than just arriving for one night.

My honest take

Go once if you’re in the right window of life for it. Stay in Haad Rin beach. Embrace the chaos. Then spend the rest of your time in Koh Phangan exploring the quieter north and east coasts, which are genuinely beautiful and nothing like the party beach.
