Thailand vs Vietnam: Two Countries I Keep Choosing Between

Thailand vs Vietnam: Two Countries I Keep Choosing Between

The honest version of this comparison

I’ve spent significant time in both countries over multiple trips and I still find myself genuinely torn between them for certain types of travel. Here’s the real comparison, beyond the usual “both are great!”

Infrastructure and ease of travel: Thailand wins clearly

Thailand’s tourist infrastructure — transport, English signage, accommodation booking systems, ATM availability — is more developed and more reliably comfortable. Vietnam is improving fast but there are still more friction points: navigating cities, transport between destinations, and occasional communication challenges. First-time Southeast Asia traveler: Thailand is the smoother introduction.

Natural scenery: Vietnam has the edge

Ha Long Bay, the terraced rice fields of Sapa, Phong Nha caves, the Hai Van Pass — Vietnam’s natural landscape is extraordinary and more varied than Thailand’s. Thailand has beautiful beaches and mountains; Vietnam has beaches, mountains, caves, jungle, and river landscapes at a scale that’s genuinely impressive. On pure scenery variety, Vietnam wins.

Food: dead heat, different profile

Thai food is bolder, more immediately satisfying, more varied by street-food standard. Vietnamese food — pho, banh mi, bun cha, fresh spring rolls — is lighter, more subtle, and arguably more elegant. Both countries have world-class food cultures. I refuse to call a winner here.

Cost: roughly equal now

Vietnam used to be noticeably cheaper. That gap has closed. Both countries offer excellent budget travel and both have accommodation at every price point. The difference is now marginal.

My take

Thailand for beaches, islands, and first-time Southeast Asia. Vietnam for cultural depth, landscapes, and repeat visitors looking for something different. Ideally: do both on one trip — they’re close enough that a Bangkok-Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh route is entirely reasonable for a 3-week itinerary.
