Bungalows on islands: ฿400–800 for basic beach bungalow. Quality varies enormously — read recent reviews.

Budget Food

Street food: ฿40–80 for pad thai, khao man gai (chicken rice), som tam. The best meals in Thailand often cost less than ฿100.

Food courts in malls: ฿80–150 for full meal. Air-conditioned, clean, excellent variety.

Local restaurants (no English menu): ฿60–120 for a meal. Point at what others are eating.

7-Eleven and FamilyMart: ฿30–60 for snacks, ฿50–80 for sandwiches. Open 24 hours everywhere.

Budget Transport

Local buses: ฿8–30 in cities. Not air-conditioned but very cheap.

Songthaew (shared truck): ฿20–50 per person for shared rides in Chiang Mai and smaller towns.

Overnight buses and trains: Budget between cities — overnight buses ฿400–800, trains ฿300–600. Save a night’s accommodation.

Renting a bicycle: ฿50–100/day — best for exploring temple areas and smaller towns.

Free Things in Thailand

  • All temple grounds (entrance fees usually ฿20–100 for main buildings, grounds are free)
  • Night markets (walking around is free, food is cheap)
  • Beaches (all public beaches in Thailand are free by law)
  • Chatuchak Market (free to enter, pay only for what you buy)
  • Lumphini Park, Bangkok

Budget tours for Chiang Mai elephant sanctuaries and island day trips on Klook often cost less than arranging independently through guesthouses.
