Thailand Island Hopping Guide

Introduction

Island hopping in Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s great travel experiences. The Gulf and Andaman coasts each have clusters of islands with regular ferry connections — you can move between them with minimal planning.

Gulf Coast Island Route (Koh Tao → Koh Phangan → Koh Samui)

The most popular island hopping route in Thailand. Regular ferries connect all three.

Suggested schedule:

  • Koh Tao: 3–5 days (diving or relaxing)
  • Koh Phangan: 3–4 days (beaches + optional Full Moon Party)
  • Koh Samui: 2–3 days (development, day trips, departure)

Ferry connections:

  • Koh Tao → Koh Phangan: Lomprayah/Seatran ferry, 1.5 hours, ฿400–600
  • Koh Phangan → Koh Samui: 30 minutes, ฿200–350
  • Koh Samui → Bangkok (bus + ferry): overnight, ฿600–900

Getting there: Overnight bus from Bangkok to Chumphon (for Koh Tao) or Surat Thani (for the other two).

Andaman Coast Route (Krabi → Koh Lanta → Koh Lipe)

For island hoppers who want stunning Andaman scenery with progressively fewer tourists.

Suggested schedule:

  • Krabi / Railay Beach: 2–3 days
  • Koh Lanta: 4–5 days
  • Koh Lipe: 3–4 days (or continue to Langkawi, Malaysia)

Ferry connections:

  • Krabi → Koh Lanta: 2 hours, ฿400–600 (November–April only for direct services)
  • Koh Lanta → Koh Lipe: 3 hours, ฿800–1,200 (high season only)

Season warning: Andaman coast ferries run November–April only. Outside this window, rough seas make many routes dangerous or impossible.

Tips for Island Hopping

Book ferry tickets online in advance during peak season (December–February). Lomprayah and Seatran ferries can sell out.

Pack light: Moving between islands frequently with heavy luggage is miserable. Ideally a 20L daypack + small bag.

Check ferry times: Some islands have only 1–2 ferries per day. Missing the last ferry means another night.

Sea sickness: Andaman speedboats can be rough. Bring medication if susceptible.
