Mt Fuji is 100km from Tokyo. What you do depends on the season. Climbing season: July 1–September 10 only. Outside that, visit the Fuji Five Lakes area or Hakone for views.

Hakone (Best Year-Round)

90 min from Tokyo (Romancecar from Shinjuku, ¥2,470+). Offers Mt Fuji views plus onsen hot springs, Hakone Open-Air Museum, rope cableway over volcanic calderas, and Lake Ashi scenic boats.
Hakone Free Pass (¥5,000–6,500): includes round-trip Romancecar + all Hakone transport. Almost always worth buying.

Kawaguchiko / Fuji Five Lakes (Best Views)

Highway bus from Shinjuku Bus Terminal: 1h50min, ¥2,000 one way. Best for classic Mt Fuji reflection shots. Best viewpoints: Kawaguchiko Lake north shore, Chureito Pagoda (398 steps, most iconic shot), Oshino Hakkai (spring ponds).

Best Viewing Conditions

Clearest in November–February (dry winter air). Summer is often hazy. Check the Fujisan Telework Center live webcam before committing to a day trip.
