Can You Extend Your Stay?
Visa-free tourists cannot extend their stay beyond the permitted period at a Japanese immigration office.
If you want to stay longer:
- Re-entry: Leave Japan and re-enter for another visa-free period. Works but immigration may question frequent entries.
- Change of status: Apply to change to a different visa category (work, student, etc.) through immigration bureau.
- Long-term visas: Working Holiday, Student, or Digital Nomad visas allow longer stays.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overstaying: Japan takes overstaying extremely seriously. Fines, detention, deportation, and multi-year bans from re-entry all apply. Leave before your permitted stay expires.
Working without a visa: Working on a tourist visa is illegal and prosecuted. Even for remote workers. Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa (2024) is the legal route.
Insufficient funds: Immigration officers can ask to see proof of funds. ¥250,000+ ($1,600+) per person is a reasonable guideline.
