How to apply:

  1. Visit the official Japan eVisa portal
  2. Create account
  3. Fill in application form
  4. Upload required documents
  5. Pay fee (~$15–25 USD)
  6. Receive approval within 3–7 business days
  7. Present eVisa at Japanese immigration

Required documents:

  • Passport (6+ months validity)
  • Passport photo (digital)
  • Travel itinerary (flights)
  • Hotel reservations
  • Proof of sufficient funds

Can You Extend Your Stay?

Visa-free tourists cannot extend their stay beyond the permitted period at a Japanese immigration office.

If you want to stay longer:

  • Re-entry: Leave Japan and re-enter for another visa-free period. Works but immigration may question frequent entries.
  • Change of status: Apply to change to a different visa category (work, student, etc.) through immigration bureau.
  • Long-term visas: Working Holiday, Student, or Digital Nomad visas allow longer stays.

What Happens at Japanese Immigration

  1. Complete landing card (on the plane or via Visit Japan Web app)
  2. Queue for immigration — foreign nationals’ line
  3. Present passport and landing card
  4. Biometric data taken (fingerprints + photo) — mandatory on first visit
  5. Immigration officer stamps passport and confirms permitted stay duration
  6. Collect baggage
  7. Customs declaration (Visit Japan Web makes this faster)

Processing time: 10–40 minutes at major airports depending on crowds.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overstaying: Japan takes overstaying extremely seriously. Fines, detention, deportation, and multi-year bans from re-entry all apply. Leave before your permitted stay expires.

Working without a visa: Working on a tourist visa is illegal and prosecuted. Even for remote workers. Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa (2024) is the legal route.

Insufficient funds: Immigration officers can ask to see proof of funds. ¥250,000+ ($1,600+) per person is a reasonable guideline.
