Current Japan Entry (2025)
Japan is fully open to tourists. All COVID-era entry restrictions have been completely removed. Entry follows standard pre-pandemic rules.
Visa-Free Entry
Citizens of 68+ countries receive visa-free entry for tourism. Key countries: USA (90 days), UK (90 days), Canada (90 days), Australia (90 days), New Zealand (90 days), and all EU member states (90 days). Check mofa.go.jp for the complete list — it’s the only reliable source.
What You Need at the Border
- Valid passport (6+ months validity recommended)
- Return or onward flight ticket
- Sufficient funds for your stay
- Accommodation address for first night
Visit Japan Web (Optional But Recommended)
Pre-register your entry information online at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp. Show a QR code at immigration instead of filling paper forms. Speeds up the process significantly at busy airports.
Immigration Card
If not using Visit Japan Web, you’ll fill a paper disembarkation card on the plane. Write your name, nationality, passport number, flight number, and Japan address.
Customs
Declare: alcohol over 3 bottles, tobacco over 200 cigarettes, foreign currency over ¥1 million. No fresh fruit, vegetables, or meat products from most countries. Japan has strict biosecurity.
