Japan’s Pop Culture Pilgrimage
For manga and anime fans, Japan is the ultimate destination — the origin point of the art forms, with dedicated districts, museums, and immersive experiences.
Akihabara (Tokyo)
The world’s most famous electronics and anime district. Multi-story shops selling manga, figures, merchandise, games, and cosplay supplies. Maid cafes where staff dress as anime maids. Key spots: Yodobashi Akiba (electronics), Animate (manga/anime merchandise), Super Potato (retro games), Liberty (figures).
Nakano Broadway (Tokyo)
An alternative to Akihabara — less touristy, more focused. Four floors of manga, anime, toys, and collectibles shops. Mandarake chain has the largest used manga/anime collection. Beloved by serious collectors.
Den Den Town (Osaka)
Osaka’s equivalent of Akihabara. Concentrated in the area around Nippombashi. More relaxed than Akihabara, good selection of vintage games and rare collectibles.
Ghibli Museum (Mitaka, Tokyo)
Studio Ghibli’s extraordinary museum — inside looks like a Ghibli film. Original short films shown that can’t be seen anywhere else. Book tickets 3 months ahead online (released monthly). ¥1,000. Essential for Ghibli fans. — book via Tiqets for the best deal.
Kyoto International Manga Museum
