Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa (2024)

Japan launched a dedicated digital nomad visa in March 2024 — the “Specified Skilled Worker” status modified for remote workers. It allows location-independent workers to live and work remotely in Japan for up to 6 months.

Eligibility Requirements

• Annual income of at least ¥10 million (approximately $67,000 USD) from non-Japanese sources
• Working remotely for a company or clients outside Japan
• Valid health insurance covering Japan
• No criminal record
• Nationality from a country with a reciprocal visa arrangement with Japan

Application Process

1. Apply at a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country
2. Required documents: proof of income (tax returns, employment contract), health insurance proof, accommodation plan in Japan, passport, application form
3. Processing time: 1–3 weeks
4. Cost: approximately ¥3,000 application fee

What It Allows

6-month stay in Japan, extendable once for another 6 months (total maximum 1 year). Cannot work for Japanese companies or clients. Family members (spouse and children) can accompany under a dependent visa.
