Introduction
Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost and second-largest island — a land of dramatic seasons, exceptional seafood, world-class skiing, and nature on a scale rare in Japan. Sapporo is the sophisticated capital; the countryside offers some of Asia’s finest wilderness.

Winter (December–March): Exceptional skiing (Niseko is world-famous), the Sapporo Snow Festival (February), pristine snow landscapes.
Summer (June–August): Lavender fields in Furano (July peak), hiking in Daisetsuzan, dairy farms, mild temperatures (20–25°C) when the rest of Japan is hot and humid.

Furano and Biei

Daisetsuzan National Park
Japan’s largest national park. Volcanic peaks, alpine tundra, hot springs, brown bears. The earliest autumn colors in Japan (September–October).

UNESCO World Heritage wilderness at the northeastern tip. Brown bears fish for salmon in autumn. Sea ice in winter. One of Japan’s last true wildernesses.
