Vietnam Itinerary: What 2 Weeks Actually Looks Like

The classic route, honestly assessed

Most Vietnam itineraries suggest the same spine: fly into Hanoi, head south, fly out of Ho Chi Minh City (or vice versa). This is a good framework because Vietnam’s layout makes it logical — the country runs north to south and the one-way ticket setup means no backtracking.

Here’s a two-week version based on what I’d actually do, not what looks good on paper.

Days 1–3: Hanoi

Base yourself in the Old Quarter — it’s chaotic and touristy but it’s also the most atmospheric neighborhood, and walking distance from Hoan Kiem Lake and the Temple of Literature. Eat bun cha at Bun Cha Dac Kim on Hang Manh Street (45,000 VND, locals and tourists, worth both queues). Take the long way back to your guesthouse every evening.

Days 4–6: Ha Long Bay (2-night cruise)

Non-negotiable. Not a day trip — a two-night cruise to actually experience the bay rather than just tick it. Budget $120–180 for a decent mid-range boat; the difference in experience between a ₫500k/day boat and a $150/night cruise is enormous. Book through Klook and read the actual reviews carefully.

Days 7–8: Hue

The Imperial City, the royal tombs, the excellent food. Hue is worth two nights and often gets skipped. Bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup) originated here and is dramatically better in Hue than anywhere else.

Days 9–11: Hoi An

Three nights minimum. The Ancient Town at dawn before tour groups arrive, cycling the countryside, eating cao lau at the covered market. More touristic than it used to be but still genuinely beautiful.

Days 12–14: Ho Chi Minh City

War Remnants Museum (genuinely difficult, genuinely important), Cu Chi Tunnels day trip, the city’s excellent food scene. HCMC is a great ending city — energetic, modern, excellent for a final splurge on food before flying home. — book a Kiwi.com in advance for the best price.
