Vietnam by Region
North Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa)
Best time: October–April
The north has a genuine winter — Hanoi temperatures drop to 15–20°C December–February. Not unpleasant, but bring a jacket. Sapa can be near freezing December–January with occasional snow.
October and November are arguably the best months — harvest season in the rice terraces, good weather, moderate crowds.
December–February: cooler weather, some drizzle, but manageable. Ha Long Bay can be misty which is atmospheric rather than unpleasant.
March–April: warming up, generally good conditions.
May–September: rainy season in the north. Hot, humid, afternoon downpours. Typhoon risk increases August–September.
Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue)
Best time: February–August
Central Vietnam has its own weather pattern — its rainy season is October–January, when the north and south are drying out. This catches many travelers off guard.
February–August is the best window for Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue. June–August is hot (33–35°C) but mostly dry and sunny.
October–December is the rainy season here — floods in Hoi An are possible and the famous lantern-lit streets lose some of their charm.
South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)
Best time: December–April
The south has two clear seasons: dry (November–April) and wet (May–October). The wet season brings heavy afternoon rain but temperatures stay at 28–34°C year-round.
December–April: excellent conditions, low humidity, sunny days. Peak tourist season.
May–October: hot and wet. Rain usually falls in short heavy bursts (1–2 hours), then clears. Mekong Delta flooding is actually an attraction — locals farm floating rice in the flood season.

Best Time to Visit Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is in northern Vietnam. October–April offers the best conditions — calm seas, clear water, good visibility. May–September can bring storms and reduced visibility.
Note: Ha Long Bay can be misty November–February. Not unpleasant — the mist gives it a mysterious quality — but blue-sky days are more common March–April.

Vietnam Festivals Worth Planning For
Tet (Vietnamese New Year): January–February (date varies). Vietnam’s biggest holiday. Cities slow down, many businesses close, fireworks are spectacular. Interesting cultural experience but expect some disruption.
Hoi An Lantern Festival: 14th day of each lunar month. Hoi An’s streets are lit only by lanterns — electric lights turned off. Extraordinary atmosphere. Plan your visit around the full moon.
Mid-Autumn Festival (Tet Trung Thu): September–October. Lanterns, moon cakes, family gatherings. Best experienced in Hoi An.
