Vietnam Travel Guide

Introduction

Vietnam is a long narrow country of extraordinary diversity. Terraced rice fields in Sapa, ancient streets of Hoi An, limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay, chaotic energy of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and 3,000km of coastline. One of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding destinations.

Vietnam by Region

North Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa)

The cradle of Vietnamese civilization. Hanoi is the capital — lakes, tree-lined boulevards, ancient temples and world-class street food. Ha Long Bay is one of the world’s great natural wonders. Sapa has Southeast Asia’s most dramatic rice terrace trekking.

Best time: October–April (dry and cool).

Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang)

The historical heart. Hue was the imperial capital. Hoi An is Vietnam’s most atmospheric ancient town — yellow walls, lanterns, exceptional food.

Best time: February–August (dry season in this region).

South Vietnam (HCMC, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s commercial engine. The Mekong Delta has floating markets. Phu Quoc is the best beach destination.

Best time: December–April.
