Three weeks changes what’s possible
Two weeks in Vietnam is a highlight reel. Three weeks lets you breathe — stay somewhere an extra day when it’s right, take a detour, slow down in Hoi An instead of rushing. Here’s how I’d structure it.
Week 1: North Vietnam
Hanoi (3 nights) → Ha Long Bay overnight cruise (2 nights) → return to Hanoi. Optional extension: Ninh Binh day trip or overnight from Hanoi — the limestone landscape here is Ha Long Bay on land and far less crowded.
If you have time, Sapa adds 2–3 days for trekking through rice terraces in the northern highlands. Overnight train from Hanoi: 8 hours, second-class sleeper around 350,000 VND.
Week 2: Central Vietnam
Fly Hanoi to Da Nang (1 hour, under $40 with VietJet or Bamboo Airways) → Hue (2 nights) → Hoi An (4 nights). The train or bus between Hue and Da Nang crosses the Hai Van Pass — genuinely spectacular coastal scenery, worth taking the slow route. — book a Kiwi.com in advance for the best price.
Week 3: South Vietnam
Fly Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City → HCMC city exploration (2 nights) → Mekong Delta day trip or overnight → fly home from HCMC or add Phu Quoc island (1.5 hour flight, beautiful beaches, significantly less busy than Thai islands).
What I’d cut if pressed
Honestly, three weeks is enough to not cut anything major. If I had to choose between Hue and the Mekong Delta, I’d keep Hue — the history and food are uniquely excellent. The Mekong Delta is great but more easily replicated by other river deltas if you’ve traveled widely.
