Japan’s Fairytale Village

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Japanese Alps — traditional farmhouses with steep thatched roofs (gassho-zukuri, “praying hands”) set in a mountain valley. In winter, snow-covered roofs create one of Japan’s most magical landscapes.

The Gassho-zukuri Houses

Steep A-frame roofs designed to shed snow and allow silkworm cultivation in upper floors. Many buildings are 250–400 years old. About 60 traditional farmhouses survive in Ogimachi district. Entry to the village is free; some farmhouses are museums (¥300–400). The Wada House is the most impressive — three stories, traditional furnishings, hands-on silk exhibits.

Best Times to Visit

Winter (December–February): Deep snow on thatched roofs, smoke from chimneys. Weekend evening light-up events (advance reservation required) are spectacular. Cold but unforgettable.
Autumn (October–November): Colorful foliage. Less crowded than winter.
