Taiwan’s most famous night market, honestly reviewed
Shilin is the largest and most visited night market in Taiwan — two levels of food stalls, clothing, games, and accessories drawing thousands of visitors nightly. It’s simultaneously the best introduction to Taiwan’s night market culture and the most tourist-heavy version of it. Here’s how to get the most from it.
The geography
Shilin splits into two distinct zones: the basement food hall inside the main building (air-conditioned, systematic, the most visited section), and the outdoor streets radiating outward from the building (more chaotic, more varied, more local). The outdoor section is better — more atmosphere, lower prices, less tourist polish. Spend 20 minutes in the basement for orientation and the rest of your time in the streets.
What to eat
Giant fried chicken (大雞排, da ji pai): The Shilin signature — a pounded and fried chicken breast the size of your face, NT$55–70. Hot, crispy, impossible to eat elegantly. Get one early before you fill up on other things.
Oyster vermicelli (蚵仔麵線, o-ah mi-sua): Thick vermicelli in a slightly gelatinous sauce with oysters and braised pork intestine (optional). NT$50–60. The texture is unusual and the flavor is great.
Stinky tofu (臭豆腐): Fermented tofu deep-fried, served with pickled cabbage. The smell is genuine; the taste is better than you’d expect. NT$50–80.
Scallion pancake (蔥油餅): Layered flatbread with green onion, fried on the griddle. NT$30–50.
Practical
MRT: Jiantan station (red line, Danshui-Xinyi Line) — walk directly to the market. Arrives in crowds by 8pm; weekdays 7–9pm are best. Cash only at most stalls.
