The things that nobody puts in the guidebook
I’ve spent the better part of three years moving around Southeast Asia — Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos — and the gap between what travel guides describe and what the experience is actually like kept surprising me, especially early on. Here’s the practical knowledge that took time to accumulate.
The “cheap” myth needs updating
Southeast Asia is still excellent value compared to Western Europe or North America. But the idea that everything is uniformly cheap needs qualification. Tourist areas in Bali, Bangkok, and Hoi An are meaningfully more expensive than they were five years ago. Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay cruises have gone up 40% since 2020. Singapore and Japan were never cheap. Budget for more than you think you’ll spend.
Pace yourself differently than you would in Europe
In Europe, you can reasonably visit a new city every day or two. In Southeast Asia, the combination of heat, sensory overload, and stomach adjustment means you need slower pacing. Three nights minimum per destination; five nights is better. The travelers I see most miserable in Southeast Asia are always the ones on a 2-week sprint trying to hit 8 countries.
The visa landscape changes constantly
Visa requirements across Southeast Asia shift regularly — Thailand extended its free period to 60 days in 2024; Vietnam’s e-visa expanded; Cambodia added online options. Always verify your specific passport’s current requirements at the relevant official website before booking. Not a blog post — the actual government site.
Your stomach will adjust, give it time
The first week in Southeast Asia often involves some digestive adjustment, especially if you eat adventurously. This isn’t food poisoning — it’s your gut bacteria adjusting to new microbiomes. Eat street food, drink bottled water in most countries, and give it a week. Most travelers are fine after that and the food is too good to eat cautiously throughout.
Book flights in advance for peak season
December–January and July–August see significant price increases on regional flights. The BKK–Bali–SGP routes especially. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for peak season travel to avoid paying 2–3x standard prices.
