The world’s best airport is also a destination
Changi Airport is routinely ranked the world’s best airport, and for good reason — it’s more like a destination than a transit point. A layover here is actually a pleasant experience rather than hours of staring at departure boards. Here’s how to use it well.
Jewel Changi: the main event
Jewel is a glass dome connected to Terminals 1, 2, and 3 containing the world’s largest indoor waterfall (Rain Vortex, 40 meters high), an indoor forest, 280+ retail and dining options, and a Canopy Park on level 5 with walking nets and mazes. Entry to the basic attractions is free; Canopy Park attractions charge SGD $5–10 per ride. You could spend 3–4 hours here without approaching boredom.
In the terminals themselves
Free rooftop swimming pools (Terminal 1 and 2, bring your own towel or rent one). Free movie theaters in terminals showing recent releases. A 24-hour butterfly garden in Terminal 3 (free). Entertainment rooms with gaming consoles throughout all terminals.
Leaving the airport on a layover
Singapore is 30 minutes from Changi by MRT (the East-West line runs directly into the city). If your layover is 6+ hours and you have a single-entry Singapore visa (or are from a visa-free country), leaving the airport makes complete sense — Singapore’s Little India, Chinatown, and the Marina Bay area are all accessible and a genuine bonus to any transit. The MRT costs SGD $2–3 each way.
