China Travel Tips for First-Timers

China Travel Tips for First-Timers

China Is Different — and That’s the Point

China rewards preparation. The internet is filtered, payments work differently, and the language barrier is real. Get ready properly and you’ll have an extraordinary trip.

Get Your Visa Early

Most nationalities need a visa — apply 4–6 weeks ahead. As of 2025, 38+ countries qualify for visa-free entry including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, UAE, Malaysia and others. Check if your country qualifies.

Sort Your VPN Before You Leave

Google, Gmail, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp — all blocked in China. Download and test a VPN (ExpressVPN, Astrill, NordVPN) before arrival — you cannot download VPN apps once inside China.

Set Up Alipay or WeChat Pay

China is largely cashless. Since 2023–2024 you can link international Visa/Mastercard to both apps without a Chinese bank account. Do this before you travel — it solves the biggest pain point for foreign tourists.

Transport Is Excellent

China’s high-speed rail is world-class — fast, cheap, on time. Book via Trip.com in English. City metro systems in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu are also excellent and very affordable.

Cultural Tips

  • Queuing is less strict — be assertive
  • Bargaining expected at markets
  • Tipping not customary
  • Register with police within 24h of arrival (hotels do this automatically)
