China Payment Apps for Tourists: WeChat Pay & Alipay

China Payment Apps for Tourists: WeChat Pay & Alipay

Why Mobile Payments Matter in China

China has gone almost entirely cashless. Many restaurants, street vendors, and shops only accept WeChat Pay or Alipay. Setting up at least one of these apps is now essentially mandatory.

The Good News: Easier for Foreigners Now

Since 2023–2024, China allows international Visa/Mastercard to be linked directly to both Alipay and WeChat Pay — no Chinese bank account needed.

Setting Up Alipay (Recommended for Tourists)

  1. Download the international Alipay app
  2. Register with your phone number
  3. Verify identity with passport
  4. Link your international Visa/Mastercard
  5. Pay by scanning QR codes

Backup: Cash

Cash is legally required to be accepted everywhere. Carry CNY 500–1,000 as backup. Best ATMs: Bank of China, ICBC. Bring USD or EUR for exchange.
