A surprisingly underrated nomad city
Seoul doesn’t show up on digital nomad lists as often as Bali or Chiang Mai, which is a mistake. The city has extraordinary internet infrastructure (gigabit fiber in most buildings), an excellent café culture that tolerates laptop work, a growing coworking scene, and food that’s both cheap and exceptional. The cost of living is higher than Southeast Asian alternatives but lower than Tokyo, London, or Sydney.
The café culture
Korean café culture is extraordinary — beautifully designed spaces, excellent coffee, and a cultural expectation that people will sit for hours working or studying. Cafés in Hongdae, Yeonnam-dong, and Seongsu-dong are particularly good for this. Iced americano (아이스 아메리카노) at ₩2,500–4,500 is Seoul’s working fuel.
Dedicated coworking
WeWork has multiple Seoul locations. FastFive (Korean coworking chain) has excellent facilities throughout the city, day passes around ₩30,000–50,000. Genie (in Gangnam and Hongdae) is popular with the tech and startup crowd. Spacious (uses closed cafés as daytime coworking during off-hours) is an interesting model if available.
Internet speeds
South Korea has the world’s fastest average internet speeds — you’ll regularly see 500mbps–1gbps in cafés and coworking spaces. This makes it ideal for video calls, large file uploads, and any work requiring heavy bandwidth. It’s a genuine advantage over much of Southeast Asia.
