Nara Travel Guide

Introduction

Nara was Japan’s first permanent capital (710–784 AD) and retains extraordinary historical significance. Today it’s best known for two things: the world’s largest wooden building housing Japan’s largest bronze Buddha, and over 1,000 wild deer that roam freely and genuinely own the park.

The Deer

Nara’s deer (Sika deer, designated as National Treasures) have been protected since the 8th century. They roam Nara Park, around the temples, and even on the streets. They are wild animals that happen to be completely accustomed to humans.

Shika senbei: Deer crackers sold throughout the park for ¥200. The deer know exactly what they are. They will bow for them (a trained behavior that has become natural), headbutt you, nibble your bags, and occasionally be aggressive if you tease them. Give the cracker quickly and step back.

Tip: Put away any plastic bags or food you don’t want eaten — the deer are fast and will take it.

Top Sights

Todai-ji Temple

Houses Japan’s largest bronze Buddha — the Daibutsu, 15 meters tall, seated in a hall that is the world’s largest wooden structure (despite being rebuilt at 2/3 of its original size after fires). ¥600 entry.

The wooden column: Inside the Daibutsu-den hall is a wooden pillar with a hole at its base supposedly the same size as the Buddha’s nostril. Squeezing through it is said to bring enlightenment. The queue of children (and adults) trying is entertaining.

Kasuga Taisha

Ancient shrine founded in 768 AD. Famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns (over 3,000), lit twice yearly. The forested approach is meditative. Free to walk grounds, ¥500 for inner area.

Kofuku-ji

Five-story pagoda and extensive temple complex overlooking Sarusawa Pond. The reflection at dusk is one of Nara’s best photo opportunities.

Yoshiki-en and Isuien Gardens

Two traditional gardens side by side near Todai-ji. Often overlooked by visitors rushing between main sites. Peaceful, beautiful.
