Koh Phangan Travel Guide

Introduction

Koh Phangan is famous worldwide for the Full Moon Party — a monthly all-night beach party that draws 20,000–30,000 people. But beyond the parties, the island has some of the Gulf of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches, excellent yoga and wellness retreats, and a laid-back island atmosphere.

The Full Moon Party

Held monthly at Haad Rin beach on the full moon (and increasingly on the half-moon and black moon too).

What to expect:

  • Multiple beach bars and stages
  • Decorative UV body paint
  • 20,000–30,000 people at peak
  • Runs from 9pm until dawn
  • Drink buckets of spirits with mixer

Practical tips:

  • Book accommodation 3+ months ahead for full moon dates
  • Stay in Haad Rin or arrange transport
  • Secure your valuables (theft is common)
  • Wear waterproof sandals (broken glass on beach)
  • Keep your drink covered
  • Budget ฿1,000–3,000 for accommodation surge pricing

Beyond the Party

Thong Nai Pan Noi

Koh Phangan’s most beautiful beach on the northeast coast. Two connected bays with clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. Far from the party scene.

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)

Accessible only by boat or 30-minute hike. Small, pristine, turquoise water. One of Thailand’s most beautiful small beaches.

Than Sadet Waterfall

Inland waterfall with royal history — several Thai kings have visited. Swimming holes and forest.

Yoga and Wellness

Koh Phangan has become one of Southeast Asia’s premier yoga destinations. Agama Yoga, Orion Healing, and dozens of other centers offer courses, retreats, and drop-in classes.
