Japan’s Tourist Taxes

Several Japanese cities and destinations now charge a tourist accommodation tax added to hotel, ryokan, and guesthouse bills. Here’s what’s currently in effect (2025).

Tokyo

Tokyo levies an accommodation tax per person per night:
¥100/night: rooms ¥10,000–14,999
¥200/night: rooms ¥15,000–19,999
¥300/night: rooms ¥20,000+

Kyoto

¥200–1,000/night per person depending on accommodation price. One of the higher tourist taxes in Japan — Kyoto uses the revenue for cultural preservation and tourism management.

Osaka

¥100–300/night per person based on room rate.

Nara

¥150/night per person (charged at accommodation).

Fujiyoshida (Mt Fuji Area)

¥1,000 per person per visit charged to those climbing Mt Fuji (paid at the 5th Station during climbing season). Separate from accommodation tax.

What to Expect

Taxes are added to your accommodation bill automatically — you don’t need to do anything. Amounts are small (¥100–1,000/night) and don’t significantly affect overall budget. All major accommodation platforms include these in the final price display.
