Chidorigafuchi Moat: Row boats on the moat with overhanging sakura — most photogenic spot in Tokyo. Free to walk; boats ¥800/30 min.
Meguro River: Cherry trees arch over the canal. Best at night when illuminated. Very popular — go on weekdays.
Ueno Park: The original Tokyo hanami spot, dense trees and great atmosphere.
Kyoto’s Best Sakura Spots
Maruyama Park: The grand weeping cherry (shidare-zakura) is Kyoto’s most celebrated single tree. Free entry.
Philosopher’s Path: 2km canal path lined with cherry trees. Dawn visit for a near-spiritual experience.
Kiyomizudera: Hillside temple with sweeping cherry blossom views over Kyoto. ¥500.
Lesser-Known Gems
Yoshino Mountain (Nara): 30,000 trees on a mountain — one of Japan’s most spectacular sakura sights. Worth a special trip.
Hirosaki Castle (Aomori): Japan’s most celebrated castle sakura in late April. Petals cover the moat in a pink carpet.
