Budget Accommodation

Japan’s hostel scene has improved dramatically. Excellent hostels with dorms from ¥2,500–3,500/night in major cities. Prices 20–30% lower outside Tokyo. Manga kissa (internet cafes) for ¥1,500–2,500 overnight if needed.

Budget Food Strategy

Breakfast: Convenience store — onigiri + coffee: ¥250–350
Lunch: Gyudon chain (Yoshinoya, Sukiya) — beef rice bowl + miso: ¥450–550
Dinner: Standing ramen: ¥700–900 or convenience store hot food: ¥500–700
Total daily food: ¥1,500–2,000

Budget Transport

Highway buses dramatically cheaper than shinkansen. Tokyo–Osaka bus: ¥3,000 vs ¥14,720 shinkansen. Overnight buses save both transport and accommodation cost. For local travel, IC card (Suica) is already the cheapest option.

Free and Cheap Attractions

  • Most Shinto shrines: free entry to grounds
  • Many temple gardens: ¥300–600
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building: free observation deck
  • Public parks: free entry
