Visa-Free 90-Day Stays
Citizens of USA, Canada, Australia, UK, and most EU countries receive 90 days visa-free on arrival. No application needed — just show up and get stamped. This is the maximum stay for most Western visitors on a single entry.
Can You Extend?
Technically yes — apply at an immigration office, but tourism extensions are rarely approved without compelling reasons. The practical alternative: a visa run — leave Japan briefly (day trip to South Korea or Taiwan), re-enter for a fresh 90 days. This works but is increasingly scrutinized if done repeatedly.
Multiple Entry Visas
Some nationalities can apply for 3 or 5-year multiple entry visas, allowing stays of up to 90 days per visit. Check with the Japan embassy in your country.
