Hue Travel Guide

Introduction

Hue was Vietnam’s imperial capital for the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945) and retains the weight of that history. The Imperial Citadel, seven royal tombs scattered across the surrounding countryside, and a cuisine refined for emperors make Hue one of Vietnam’s most rewarding cities.

Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi)

The walled citadel complex modeled on Beijing’s Forbidden City. Built 1804–1833. The Ngo Mon gate is the main entrance.

Much of the citadel was destroyed in the 1968 Tet Offensive — ongoing restoration is slowly reconstructing the lost structures.

Highlights: Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace (Throne Room), Forbidden Purple City ruins, Nine Dynastic Urns.

Entry: 200,000 VND. Allow 2–3 hours.

Royal Tombs

Seven emperors’ tombs are scattered across the hills south of Hue. The three most visited:

Minh Mang Tomb: The most symmetrical and architecturally perfect. Beautiful lake reflections.

Tu Duc Tomb: The most romantic — the emperor spent years composing poetry here. Beautiful gardens.

Khai Dinh Tomb: The most unusual — a French-influenced concrete structure on a hill. Interior mosaic work is extraordinary.

Entry: 150,000 VND each. Hire a motorbike or bicycle to visit multiple tombs in one day (25–35km total route).

Thien Mu Pagoda

Seven-story octagonal pagoda on the Perfume River. Active monastery. Famous Austin-Healey car on display — the car that drove the Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc to his 1963 self-immolation protest in Saigon.

Free. Accessible by boat from central Hue (30 minutes, scenic).

Hue Cuisine

Hue’s food is Vietnam’s most refined — developed for royal courts, complex, spice-forward.

Bun bo Hue: Spicy beef noodle soup. More complex and intense than pho. Hue’s most famous dish.

Banh khoai: Crispy crepe with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts. Smaller than banh xeo.

Com hen: Tiny clam rice. Unique to Hue. Acquired taste but fascinating.

Banh beo: Steamed rice cakes topped with shrimp powder and crispy pork skin.
